This is my very first time blogging and I am entering this world with caution. I guess I am a true Digital Immigrant. I used pen and ink (purple ink in a small white ceramic container)in elementary and middle school. I never used a calculator in high school (we had a sliding ruler)I never used a typewriter when I was in college, I used to hire someone to type my papers because the professors did not want the "onion skin" paper used and that was the only way I could have survived typing a 20 page document - it allow me to correct my mistakes. When I went to graduate school I did get a computer (a mac)and that was scary. I had to remember to save regularly and label all my disks in order to stay organized.
Well here I am today, in a DE course. I feel like an explorer in a jungle, wondering what will jump at me next but keeping my eyes wide open at the extraordinary adventure I am in.

Hi Irene,
ReplyDeleteWith technology changing so quickly, it can be a daunting task learning new applications and software. However, after much repetition, you'll become a pro before you know it. My mother just went back to school at age 58. She just graduated and is starting her Masters in Nursing. I have become her computer consultant and I never thought that I would be teaching my parents how to use certain software. Being a Gen Xer--I have been immersed in digital media most of my life. I enjoy teaching and training, as I also learn as I go.

Ben,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to your mother, in her field technology is very important and she is lucky to have you around. I am 59 and my two children (19 and 31) look at me as the techno guru or should I say vampire: I devour anything about technology and get very frustrated when I don't understand how to navigate new software or sites.
Wow! You've really witnessed first hand just how far technology has come! We had a typewriter growing up, but it was really just because we couldn't afford a computer... and at least it even had Word Correct so you could more or less backspace to white out mistakes.
ReplyDeleteYour post reminded me of an English teacher I had in high school. He had, had very minimal exposure to computers and it was made clear the first time he ever went over MLA formatting. He went on and on about spacing and margin sizes... how he planned to check all of our pages with a ruler! Little did he realize we could plug into MS Word everything he needed us to include! Needless to say, I'm grateful! Not sure I could have written those papers and maintained my sanity otherwise!
